Cloaked apes inhabit the deep forests of tropical and subtropical lands, where they glide through the treetops in search of food. These diurnal foragers subsist primarily on a diet of fruit and nuts, though they do occasionally eat small animals that they manage to ambush from above.
The cloaked ape is named for the flaps of skin that stretch from its wrists to its ankles. When not extended for gliding through the treetops, these skin flaps resemble the folds of a cloak.
CombatCloaked apes are territorial, but they rarely attack unless they significantly outnumber the intruders. Otherwise they stay in the treetops, hooting and hurling loose branches and half-eaten fruit, berries, and nuts at their foes.
Improved Grab (Ex): If a cloaked ape hits an opponent that is its own size or smaller with both claw attacks, it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. The creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply use its claws to hold the opponent (–20 penalty on grapple check, but the cloaked ape is not considered grappled). In either case, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals damage for two claw attacks.
Skills: Cloaked apes have a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks and can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened.
Source: Monster Manual II, page 46. Added Multiattack as this creature was missing a feat; the attack bonus for its claw attacks were adjusted accordingly. Gave the creature the ape’s racial bonus to Climb so the math on the skill points comes out correctly.
