Master Spell Index

Introduction

In the Magnus Bibliotheca, the Great Library of Ninetowers, itself the city of wizards and the seat of power of the Ordo Ars Magica (the Order of Magical Art), there can be found an enchanted, sentient book known as the Dominus Catalogus Incantamentorum. This grimoire contains an index of every written work in the Great Library—but more importantly, it contains the Master Spell Index, a description of every spell—whether arcane or divine or otherwise—known to the Order. This is not an actual spellbook; it contains spell descriptions but not actual spells, since a plurality of them cannot be cast by wizards anyway (at least, not without the use of limited wish or wish) and spells are never handed out for free. Still, the Order is interested in all magic; one never knows what might be useful…or what one might face.

This page serves a similar purpose, and therefore the same name. It is a list of every class with a unique spell list, which is linked to each of those spell lists. Each spell on those lists is, in turn, linked to the full description of that spell, all corrected for errata, with errors and omissions terminated with extreme prejudice as soon as they are detected.

Spell Lists by Class

The following classes have unique spell lists. Some are very similar to other classes, but if they have even one spell (or lack one spell) of a class they are similar to, they get their own list here.

Note that the sorcerer and wizard classes now have separate spell lists. There were 22 spells that could only be cast by sorcerers and four that could only be cast by wizards, so by the criteria of the previous paragraph they warrant separate lists.

Important Note: If you have difficulty finding a particular spell, check Renamed Spells below. Some spells had names given to more than one spell in different sources. Other names were changed in later publications.

Spell Name Superscripts

Some spell names in the spell lists linked above will have small blue superscripts after their names. These superscripts indicate important characteristics about the spells so marked. A list of these superscripts and their meanings are below.

A: Augmentable. Casters (usually sorcerers) may sacrifice another spell slot of the augmentable spell’s character class to augment this spell’s effect. Example: a cleric or a favored soul who learns mark of the enlightened soul can sacrifice a prepared cleric spell or favored soul spell slot to augment it. See individual spell descriptions for details.

F: Spell has a focus.

M: Spell has a material component which has a gold piece value. Such items must be tracked in inventory separately; they are not assumed to be in a caster’s spell component pouch.

X: This spell has an experience point (XP) cost to cast. If this XP cost would cause its caster to lose a level by dropping below the minimum XP to attain her current character level, the spell cannot be cast.

Naming Conventions

Greater (Spell Name)

Any spell whose name begins with greater is alphabetized in these spell lists according to the second word of the spell name. Thus, the description of a greater spell appears near the description of the spell on which it is based. Spell chains that have greater spells in them include those based on the spells arcane sight, command, dispel magic, glyph of warding, invisibility, magic fang, magic weapon, planar ally, planar binding, prying eyes, restoration, scrying, shadow conjuration, shadow evocation, shout, and teleport.

Lesser (Spell Name)

Any spell whose name begins with lesser is alphabetized in these spell lists according to the second word of the spell name. Thus, the description of a lesser spell appears near the description of the spell on which it is based. Spell chains that have lesser spells in them include those based on the spells confusion, geas, globe of invulnerability, planar ally, planar binding, and restoration.

Mass (Spell Name)

Any spell whose name begins with mass is alphabetized in these spell lists according to the second word of the spell name. Thus, the description of a mass spell appears near the description of the spell on which it is based. Spell chains that have mass spells in them include those based on the spells bear’s endurance, bull’s strength, cat’s grace, charm monster, cure critical wounds, cure light wounds, cure moderate wounds, cure serious wounds, eagle’s splendor, enlarge person, fox’s cunning, heal, hold monster, hold person, inflict critical wounds, inflict light wounds, inflict moderate wounds, inflict serious wounds, invisibility, owl’s wisdom, reduce person, and suggestion.

Superior (Spell Name)

Any spell whose name begins with superior is alphabetized in these spell lists according to the second word of the spell name. Thus, the description of a superior spell appears near the description of the spell on which it is based. Spell chains that have superior spells in them include those based on the spells invisibility and resistance.

Swift (Spell Name)

Any spell whose name begins with swift is alphabetized in these spell lists according to the second word of the spell name. Thus, the description of a swift spell appears near the description of the spell on which it is based. Spell that have swift in them include those based on the spells expeditious retreat, fly, and invisibility. “Swift” denotes versions of those spells with a faster casting time (1 swift action) but a shorter duration (typically 1 round).

Renamed Spells

Some spells in the Player’s Handbook (version 3.5) were named after spellcasters from specific settings; these names were stripped from those spell names in the Standard Reference Document. The Spell Compendium, Player’s Handbook II, and Complete Mage (among others) added more spells that were named after wizards from these other settings. It was decided for Archive Three-Five to remove these names as often one had settings that did not contain the named spellcasters but still had the spell, so A35 follows the SRD’s and the Spell Compendium’s custom of altering those spell names to omit the creators’ names.

At other times it was necessary to rename a spell because it duplicated the name of another spell with significantly different effects in another source. For example, critical strike was used to name a spell in the Spell Compendium and a different spell in Complete Mage. Likewise, sink in Stormwrack worked differently than sink in the Spell Compendium did—and for completely different classes.

The spell lists will show any of the old names in enclosed in ﴾ornate parenthses﴿ before the book code in braces at the end of a particular spell’s listing. Thus, the listing for clenched fist begins with Clenched Fist: and ends with ﴾Bigby’s clenched fist﴿ {PH} in the sorcerer’s and wizard’s spell lists.

A book code of {?} in the list below indicates an unknown (and probably non-version 3.5) source. As much of this list comes from the Renamed Spells section of Spell Compendium, pages 5 and 6, which did not list original soucres, there are quite a few spells so marked.

The list below is to help find spells in Archive Three-Five by their original names.

  1. Name duplicated in another spell with a different function, whether it differed by a little or a lot. The book code after the colon is the source of the spell that kept the name in question.
  2. This one has two different names because someone decided to name it Otiluke’s suppressing field in the spell lists and Otiluke’s impressing field in the spell description’s title. The actual descriptive text used “suppress” several times (including referring to the spell as suppressing field) in that text and “impress” exactly zero times. As per the Errata Rule on Primary Sources, the descriptive text is the primary source, so in the end it was decided to simply name it suppressing field and have done with it.
